Stolen flamingos found in teen's garage
Peggy Connolly's friends gave her the pink lawn birds as a gift to cheer her up because she is battling cancer. It turned out two teens made off with them.

If my teen was caught stealing and then storing the flamingos in my garage....i would make him do the dishes for a week and cut his allowance to $125.00 for that week...AND take his cell for a night...but just while he was sleeping. I know...I know a bit harsh..but how are these kids going to learn to act in a responsible manner?

cell phone for a night? How about a year? Your punishment is comic. How about cleaning bed pans in a terminal cancer ward 8 hours a day for a month? How about holding a patients hand for hours on end while they writhe in pain caused by their bodies giving in on them? How about wondering why your child would steal something from any one's home after the great upbringing you supposedly gave them. I hope the D.A. goes for the max allowed a juvenile for A-Felony Theft, and the judge gavels down on these "children."

You mean if you actually noticed. Evidently someone else had to point out to the parents that the flamingos were in their garage!
You also forgot to take his x-Box 360 away for an hour. Oh and you drive him to school late instead of him being able to take the $40k car you bought him for his 16th birthday.
There, that should do it!

I have seen it done with a garden gnome, except they didn't write a randsome note, they sent postcards home from it and took pictures of it in various spots as if it was on vacation. In the end of their trip, they snuck it back where it belonged. I think that was actually clever. I would get a garden gnome if someone would do that for me.

I agree with your comments; there really is no suitable defense for their actions. The teens involved missed the chance to return the flamingos in a timely fashion, and ended up looking mean, uncaring, and selfish. Clearly not a lot of brain activity was going on in their little minds.
I think an appropriate punishment would be written apologies to the victim, and 100 hours of community service in the form of yard care, housekeeping assistance, and pretty much anything the victim desires.
I always tried to teach my children that you'll never get in trouble for leaving someone else's property alone.

KATU: Can you PLEASE ditch this forum style? It is terrible. There is no provision for editing your post to correct a typo, and worse yet, there is no way for others to leave simple feedback to show approval or disapproval.
I would be interested in seeing a user poll on this subject. You game?

I JUST LOVE THE COLOR OF THE PAGES.....sorry for shouting.
All I am looking for on this site is the breaking news....that is not breaking anymore as the ads all load and pages go up and down for ads.........and this site is slower.
Looks like the intense debate option is getting tiny'er also..
Ebay must be their model...........nuff said

Wasn't it just last year that everybody was laughing about the yard gnomes that were stolen in the night, and placed on somebody else's lawn? I have a feeling that had the flamingos not have caused such a media frenzy, that they too would have re-appeard on some unsuspecting persons lawn.

See now, here is the problem with these new bs pages you have set up. Anyone can impersonate anyone else. On certain sites that is really funny, but on a news site it really isn't. It will take no time at all for this to be wall to wall blathering trolldom. I won't put my usual username on these 'community' pages because I don't want to have to keep saying "that wasn't me".
(I don't know what it is that KATU does that interests the trolls so much in the first place...but boy do you guys bring them in!)

I am not "riled" over this format, just disappointed. This was a clear case of something getting "fixed" when it wasn't broken in the first place.
When I see that a news item is presented in this format, I generally click away from it and go elsewhere. If KATU wants to encourage people to click away from their website, so be it.
I believe they would be wise to do a poll. Come on, KATU; step up to the plate.

Although this story would make for interesting reading (ie., "The Flamingo Brief"), the teens SHOULD be held accountable for their actions and made a clear example for other adolescent (sp?) idiots out there. Definitely give them lots of community service to perform (ie., 1000 hrs should suffice)!!!
